Calculating Child Support

Step 1

The first step in calculating child support is to have both parents fill our financial affidavits. There are two types depending on the gross annual income of each parent. These affidavits include:
  • Salary/Wages
  • Bonuses/Commissions/Tips/Overtime
  • Disability
  • Worker’s Compensation
  • Unemployment Earnings
  • Pension/Retirement
  • Social Security Benefits
  • Spousal Support
  • And Other Various Forms of Income

Step 2

After the net income is calculated for each parent is added together, the court uses the Child Support Guidelines to determine the amount of child support to be given. There are also some mathematic equations that are factored into the calculation that Attorney Macci can explain in detail once the net income is determined.

Step 3

The third step requires diving additional expenses like healthcare and other childcare costs. These are divided between both parents. It’s not always convenient for these expenses to be split between the parents, in which case one parent can agree to pay for one expense in full, while the other parent pays for another expense in full. These agreements will need to have court approval.

Step 3
